Today we traveled from Tanzania back to Kenya. We had an easy boarder crossing. On the way to our next hotel we stopped at St. Joseph shelter of hope Hospital in Voi. They had a men ward, women ward, maternity ward, ante-natal and post natal wards. 3-4 needs per ward with some curtains for privacy. They have a cooled pharmacy to keep the medications from getting too hot & they also have a fridge for meds that need it. There were 3 clinic rooms, 1 er/observation room and 3 private pay rooms. There was also a triage room for doctors to see patients & a triage room for vitals. Lastly there is a surgical suit for general surgeries. They also have an ultrasound machine, X-ray, & lab which has a relatively quick turn around time. Mombasa is the closest city with a CT scan. They have HIV testing, which is a big problem in Africa, with a private screen the patient can go behind. They make their income by bottling clean, safe water & selling it. The typical hospital fee is $300 shillings or roughly $3 US dollars. They also sew their own uniforms. They have a storage container for supplies and we were able to donate several supplies including stethoscopes & blood pressure cuffs. There is a hotel next door for family to stay at or a person before they have surgery. There is also a church & cafeteria in the hospital grounds.
Our new hotel overlooks Tsavo park east where we were greeted by a vision of the park with several elephants out at the watering hole. The rest of the day was vacation so most of us spent our afternoon lounging in the infinity pool which also overlooks Tsavo park. We have not got to see any lions yet but we are hoping to hear them tonight!
